After session 1.
A mixed group of around 14 people? A very enthusiastic course leader! The start was somewhat delayed by a troublesome piece of id card producing software. It refused point blank to produce any id photographs! Ironic really.
We each introduced ourselves, knowing full well that we would forget each others names within the next 2 minutes. A brief outline of the course. An introduction to some influential photographers.
Richard Billingham
Christian Boltanski
jenny holzer
Sally Mann
magnum photography a specific photographer was mentioned, but I missed the name!
Our first task is to find one image that we find inspires us photographically. Not easy, given the number of outstanding images. I'm found two possibles. One is the terrifying but brilliant image of the self imolating monk
See the following link for more information
How could anyone be that composed while burning, and how could the photographer have been detached enough to compose and take the picture?
However, I finally decided on this image ...
Martin Munkacsi .. "Fun at breakfast".
See here for more information
About as far from the burning monk as it is possible to get! This is just such a bizarre image. For me it sums up the photographers imperative to both capture an image of an instance in time and to provoke a response from the viewer. In this case this achieves both with an additional surreal and comical twist.
Richard has yet to see this blog but I know he will be interested .A one on one lesson in "how to get the best pics from your camera"would be a good idea when next you meet up.However, the smart phone is doing a reasonable job till then.. we just need to remember to use it.
ReplyDeleteI particularly like the frozen plants /leaves and buds.Amazing detail.
Keep clicking and we will keep watching.
